It is the first time that the well-known American teacher of Buddhism Alan Wallace conducts a meditation course at the Tibetan Center. He explains the practice of meditative quiescence (shamatha) which he practiced himself since the early seventies. Drawing from the Theravada and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Alan Wallace emphasizes a three-phased approach to shamatha: mindfulness of breathing, observing the mind, and awareness of awareness. Alan Wallace will explain these practices and guide meditation sessions.
Arrival in the afternoon. The course starts with an evening session on 30th of August and ends after lunch on 3rd September.
B. Alan Wallace is one of the most well-known Western Buddhist teachers. He began his studies and practice in the 1970s. From 1973 to 1987 he was a monk and performed lengthy meditation retreats. He earned his undergraduate degree in physics, philosophical science and Sanskrit, and his Ph.D. in religious studies. Alan Wallace conducts seminars in Buddhism all over the world and is author and translator of about 30 books.
